What is a S.P.O?
A S.P.O. is a Special Police Officer who is licensed by the Boston Police Department to exercise police powers on certain properties within the city of Boston.

What is Rule 400?
Rule 400 are the rules and regulations promulgated by the Boston Police Department governing Special Police Officers.

What are the training requirements to become a S.P.O.?
A S.P.O. must complete the 100 hour program to become an unarmed Special Officer and complete the additional 60 hour program to become an armed Special Officer.

What are the qualifications of a S.P.O. applicant?
  1. Be a U.S. Citizen
  2. Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
  3. Reside within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  4. Be able to read, write, and understand the English language
  5. Have a High School Diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
  6. Be capable of physically, emotionally, and mentally performing the duties of a licensed Special Officer within the scope of Rule 400
  7. Be a suitable person of good moral character (must pass a CORI check)

What are the three (3) categories a student must fall under to enroll into the S.P.O. training program?
  1. Employees of the City of Boston, Inspection Services, Protective Services, Health Commission
  2. Personnel from a security company that is licensed by the Boston Police Department
  3. Self-sponsored
